A piece of American manufacturing and WWII history:
The sheets were produced at the Westinghouse factory in Trafford, PA in 1945. When we received them, they were still packed and unopened in the original cardboard box with the original label from 80 years ago.
Why were they unopened all of these years you might wonder?
This Micarta was originally intended for use in the Westinghouse Electrical factory in Mansfield, OH. This huge factory sat on 42 acres and employed 8000 employees at its peak. It opened in 1918 and after decades in operation, it closed for good in 1990.
In the early 1940's the Mansfield factory transformed from making household appliances to producing aircraft parts, binoculars and other items for the war efforts. As you can see from the label, these likely left the PA Westinghouse plant in August 1945. Only a month later on September 2, 1945 WWII officially ended. With the end of the war, the Mansfield plant immediately went back to producing appliances, and these sheets, likely intended for use in the aircraft parts they were making for the war, were stashed away and never touched again for decades.
